I read modern day doctors think Jane Austen probably died of Addison's Disease. That was not a diagnosis 200 years ago, so they are guessing by her recorded symptoms. However, who knows? Like Prince Albert and plenty of others back then, they often just did not know.

"By the end of 1930, Adorée had appeared in forty-five films, the last four of them talkies. That year she was diagnosed with tuberculosis and lived only a few years longer. Adorée went against her physician's advice by finishing her final film, Call of the Flesh with Ramon Novarro. At its completion, she was rushed to a sanitarium in Prescott, Arizona, where she lay flat on her back for two years in an effort to regain her physical health. In April 1933, she left the sanitarium. At this point, it was thought she had recovered sufficiently to resume her screen career, but she swiftly weakened and her health declined day by day. She was moved from her modest home in the Tujunga Hills to the Sunland health resort in September 1933." I live in Sunland-this area back in the day was home to several sanitariums, and many people with asthma and TB would come here to rest. In fact, Pasadena was the big draw for TB and asthmatic patients in the early 1900's. That was of course, before the smog...!

My stepdad contracted TB. I don't know when, but he passed away in the early eighties. When they performed the autopsy is when they found out he had TB. Not long after, the Health Dept. came a knockin' and marched us down to the office to be tested. It's kinda like a social disease, everyone who came in contact with him needed to be sure they didn't have it. Thanks for the Video Steve, I learn something new here all the time. So long for now and Thanks again!

I've been to Renee's crypt. It give such a sad feeling. She died just five days after her 35th birthday. Some of her films survive and have been issued on DVD. She made two sound films in 1930 and would have transitioned to sound quite well had she lived. Lovely accent. I keep a photo of her on my nostalgic picture wall. She spent most of 1932 in Prescott, AZ (my home state) recovering and for a while it looked like she might but sadly never happened. Another well known celebrity who was fighting TB at the very same time was singer Jimmie Rodgers (1897-1933) He spent most of his career starting in 1927 with TB. His last recordings were from his sick bed.
